No Line Watercolor Technique

December 7, 2020 Leave a Comment

No Line Watercolor is a fun technique to try!

The No Line Watercolor Technique is a fabulous way to create one-of-a-kind cards with minimal supplies. Once you’ve picked your favorite line art stamp and figured out which colors you’d like to use, the only thing standing between you and your masterpiece is a Water Painter and some Watercolor Paper.

No Line Watercolor Technique

Using a light color ink that will blend with the colors you choose for your image, stamp your line art image on a piece of scrap paper first, then stamp on a piece of watercolor paper without re-inking.

Add the first lightest color ink of your choice to the image with a Water Painter brush, layering as needed.

Move on to the next darker color, continuing to watercolor your line-art image with ink and a Water Painter.

Continue until image is complete.

Details for the Sample

For the pictured sample, I stamped the kitty image from Pampered Pets in Daffodil Delight ink. I pooled Petal Pink ink in the lid of the stamp pad by smooshing the pad and painted the nose and inner ears with my small Water Painter.

I then swiped a pad of Bumble Bee on half of Clear Block A and swiped Cinnamon Cider on the other half. Squeezing the smallest Water Painter until the brush was wet, I swirled the brush in Bumble Bee to load it with ink and then I painted the body.

I again squeezed my brush over a piece of paper towel, letting the dripping water clean the bristles of the brush. Dab the bristles on the paper towel until color no longer transfers. Next I loaded the brush with Cinnamon Cider and added the ink to the body. After cleaning the brush again, I used a drier brush to outline and add details to the kitty.

I added another dollop of Bumble Bee over the Cinnamon Cider and let the piece dry. Then I took a Cinnamon Cider marker and drew in the whiskers.

I placed the watercolored kitty on a piece of Cinnamon Cider cardstock cut out with a Stitched Rectangle die.

Embellishment Tip

Did you know you can change the color of many an embellishment just be using a Stampin’ Blend? I colored a heart trinket from the Playful Pets Trinkets with a Bronze Stampin’ Blend and threaded it on a long strand of gold trim from the Forever Greenery Trim pack. I wrapped it three times around the Cinnamon Cider focal point. For the card base I used a piece of Mint Macaron cardstock with a mat from the Gilded Autumn Specialty DSP pack mounted at an angle.

What line image stamp is your favorite? Give it a go and see what happens. No Line Watercoloring is a technique with no boundaries!
